Ellensburg Blue is so rare that New York jeweler Tiffany & Co. has even used the precious gem in some of there jewelry designs. They even sold an Ellensburg Blue Agate for a cool 10k and that was little over 50 years ago. By 1940 or so the most productive agate beds were depleted, making finds rare to impossible to find. Most of the existing beds are on private land, and even those who do get a chance to scour them will consider a single small find pretty good for a whole day’s work.
Today, you can spend days hunting and find nothing. If you do choose venture out to hunt this gem stone, DO NOT TRESPASS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. No trespassing means no trespassing. Be respectful and be safe. There is one ranch that will open its door to the public allowing you to hunt. Google it if your ever in central Washington.
I found this chunk of Ellensburg Blue Agate fall of 2018.
I am lucky enough to be family friends of the family who owns Horse Canyon Ranch, the ground zero of Ellensburg Blue Agates and this is where I found this unbelievable huge chunk of blue.
This is one of the largest known specimens of Ellensburg Blue available today on the market and it can be yours.
I’m happy to let this specimen go as I have one even bigger that I might part with in the future. But until then, “Little Boy Blue” is available.
Also known simply as E-blue, this precious gem Known for its striking blues, sky blues and purples, the Ellensburg Blue is one of the hardest mineral to come by. It comes in a range of colors from sky blue to a deep purplish color, though prized above all is a vibrant cornflower blue. According to local legend, Native American tribes valued these blue stones for their beauty, so much so that only tribal chiefs were allowed to wear them. They where and are considered to be a very sacred stone.
For several decades tourists came up to Ellensburg just to root around the soil for E-blue hoping to find just a flake.
All things considered, your time is probably best spent scouring local jewelry stores who sell raw, polished, and set stones for a wide price range. Be prepared to pay a hefty price for true Ellensburg Blue.
