Serendibite is an extremely rare silicate mineral that was first discovered in 1902 in Sri Lanka by Dunil Palitha Gunasekera and named after Serendib, the old Arabic name for Sri Lanka. Combination of calcium, magnesium, aluminum, silicon, boron and oxygen. Serendibite forms small blue-green, blue-grey to deep blue, sometimes yellow, transparent tabular crystals. The material is strongly pleochroic: yellowish green, bluish green and violet-blue. Serendibite is rarely found as facet-grade material. Before the 2005 discovery of serendibite in Mogok, Myanmar, there were only 3 known faceted serendibites, which were from the original Sri Lankan find. The serendibite from Sri Lanka and Myanmar is believed to be the only sources for facet-grade material.
Serendibite is on just about every list of the ten rarest gems in the world. This crystal does come in clear, but the opaque black is more common these days, although still an extremely rare crystal.
